With Michelle Obama writing her recommendation letter, it’s no wonder that Yara Shahidi was accepted into every school which she applied. And while she was intentionally tight-lipped about the schools that accepted her, she recently revealed her choice through an Instagram post.
Harvard it is.
She’ll be starting in the fall along with Malia Obama, who, like Yara, took a year off to get a head start on some internships. In an interview with People, Yara explained why she was also going to take a gap year.
“I know when Malia Obama announced [she was deferring], she got a lot of slack, but I feel like what’s interesting is I know so many people that are deferring. It’s more than to just roam around or just sit down and stare at a wall, but it will also give me an opportunity to work. I’ve been working more than half of my life and that’s always been balanced with school and all of the other responsibilities, so to have a year to focus on work and to focus on specified interests will be nice before I pick a career and choose what I want to study and my life path.”
While Yara understands that her college experience will be more unorthodox than her fellow students, she said she wants to be on campus at some point.
Smart.
Congratulations to Yara! We wish her the best.
