In the words of relationship strategist Blair Nash, “Love is a beautiful thing, until it ain’t.” In some cases the signs of it turning ugly are plain as day, making it a no-brainer to plan your exit strategy with the quickness. But sometimes, it’s not so easy to see that your fairytale is actually hell! Do any of things seemingly innocent scenarios remind you of your current relationship? If so, the boo is toxic and you need to distance yourself from him ASAP.
- He’s ALWAYS checking in. If you’ve always been in relationships where the guy didn’t give two craps about effective communication, a man who checks in frequently will seem like a gift from the love gods. But sometimes, all this calling and texting is a paranoid means to see where you are and what you’re doing and who you’re doing it with.
- He’s asks for your phone regularly. In 2017, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t care that their cell phone is dead or doesn’t work properly. If he always needs to “see” your phone for one reason or another, he’s probably snooping through it. Even if you have nothing to hide from your man, you should not be OK with him secretly snooping. This could mean he has serious trust issues, or controlling ways.
- His family is confused about what you see in him. If his parents and siblings describe him as something totally different from what you’ve seen thus far, you may have a case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde on your hands. Sometimes, family members get into petty arguments and say things that are not so nice about one another; however, it’s a major red flag if you hear things about him being abusive, criminal activity, or a serial cheater.
- The smallest things set him off. Once upon a time, I went on a dinner date with this guy who stormed out of the restaurant because I told the cook he seasoned the food really well. I didn’t do it in a flirtatious manner; I simply stated a fact. What really threw me for a loop was that my date and I had just talked about how tasty the meal was prior to him flipping out. His behavior exhibited extreme insecurity and I took that as a sign from God to delete the drama before it really popped off.
- He tells you to stop wearing makeup. Like I said, some things seem refreshing and cute when you’ve never experienced them before. So to hear a guy say you’re beautiful without makeup is flattering, but I know plenty women who later discovered such flattery was a guise to get them to stop pampering themselves so other men would not find them desirable.
